Samsung Electronics has resumed the sale of its 5.7-inch flagship smartphone, Galaxy Note 7, on the local market after a global recall due to a faulty battery issue. A record sales figure of 21,000 handsets has been reported on the first day of its sales resumption on 01 October.
The top-notch phablet, a hybrid of a phone and a tablet PC, had been launched in 10 countries including the USA, China, Canada and Australia on 19 August this year. The new Galaxy Note 7 with a green battery indicator in place of white in the early version is expected to be available internationally once the worldwide recall is completed, possibly at the end of October. The total recall, announced on 02 September of the 2.5 million units sold worldwide, which include 1 million in the USA alone, is however officially on until the end of March next year.
South Korea’s tech giant recalled its large-screen Note 7 after a spate of consumer complains across the globe of exploding during and after charging its 3,500mAh battery. Several airlines were quick to ban the handset being switched on or charged on board for safety reasons. The national air carrier, SriLankan also followed suite banning the use of Galaxy Note 7 on board or stowing it in checked-in baggage.
As a swift consumer safety measure, Samsung Electronics made available an over-the-air (OTA) software update to limit the charging of its latest Galaxy Note’s battery to only 60% of its capacity to prevent battery overheating.
The exploding battery issue has tarnished the brand image of the world’s largest smartphone maker, plummeting its stock value. The negative impact has forced the company to lower this year’s Galaxy Note 7 sales projections to 6 million against the previous estimation of 12 million.
According to sales reports, 80% of South Korean users who responded to the initial recall have refused a refund and opted for a replacement, showing their loyalty to the state-of-the art functionality of the high-end device since no other handset is equipped with such functions as an iris-scanner, a water-proof stylus and an instant translation facility. Apple’s iPhone 7 and LG Electronics’ V20 are the two other strong contenders on the global smartphone market competing with Samsung's Galaxy Note 7.
