Sri Lankan Prime Minister visits India in the wake of SAARC summit pull-out

The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremasinghe has arrived in India for a 3-day official visit from 04 to 06 October 2016 on completion of the first ever visit to New Zealand by a Sri Lankan leader. He is due to call on the Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and attend the opening plenary of the Indian Economic Summit organized by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi. The visit comes in the wake of Sri Lanka’s pulling out of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit scheduled to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan in November, following India’s move.

The Sri Lankan Premier will hold discussions with the Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, the Minister of Home Affairs Rajnath Singh, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gases Dharmendra Pradhanand and the National Security Adviser Ajit Doval during his second visit to India since assumption of office in January last year.

Prime Minister Wickremasinghe is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera, the Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrema and the Minister of Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure Haren Fernando.
